I started playing ice hockey at the age of 41, when the NHL went on strike.
A bunch of us old guys signed up for a league and we are now addicted. With ice time tough to come by, I bought a SpeedTrac and a skills pad so I could learn to shoot in my basement.
Originally I was in the 30s on the wrist shot, 40s on the snap shot, and 40s on the slap shot. After a week with the SpeedTrac all my shots were 10 mph higher. With some more practice, I now shoot in the 50s on the wrist, 60s on the snap, and high 60s on the slap shot, with a high of 75 mph.
I have coached teammates using the SpeedTrac and shown them the 10+ mph value of simply shifting your weight properly. Also the 3-5 mph gains possible from changing the distance from the shooter to the puck, changing the contact point on the blade, or changing the position of the puck relative to the stance. One team mate wondered which stick flex was better for him, SpeedTrac made the decision easy.
